Oftentimes New Year's resolutions target big goals like losing 50 pounds or running a marathon. Research shows that thinking small and setting achievable, easy-to-meet goals may be the most effective way to meet larger, long-term health goals. 

One small step toward healthier habits could be eating breakfast every morning. Many Americans do not eat breakfast, despite studies that show regular breakfast eating is associated with better health, better eating patterns and healthier weight.

How Does Food and Nutrition Literacy Affect Your Health?

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, people who accurately estimate portion sizes and use food labels tend to have better health outcomes. Nutritional literacy and numeracy skills play major roles in this research finding. 

This serving-size chart, used in several Dairy Council of California lessons, helps teach food literacy and numeracy skills. 

Dairy Council of California offers a wide variety of nutrition education resources for schools. Classroom curriculum is available for K–12, and programs align to Common Core State Standards and MyPlate.
